Environment the big winner

A bit of lateral thinking and some help from Konica Minolta has helped Box Hill Institute win the prestigious Outstanding Business Innovation Award at the 2008 NIPPA Print Awards. The team at BHI Digital Print Services, Box Hill Institute's In-house print operation, engaged Konica Minolta to conduct a Print Audit in order to assess its carbon footprint from a print production perspective. The audit helped review all printing and print devices, including instances of a 1:2 ratio of printer to person, to determine exactly the amount of wastage and how it could reduce the Institute's environmental impact.

Executive manager at BHI Digital Print Services, Martin Booth said: "Our starting point was that we suspected we had areas for improvement when it came to our carbon footprint. Now we have the information we can start to make some meaningful and quantifiable changes. Even though the Institute's print facility makes a relatively small contribution to reducing the overall carbon footprint of the whole TAFE, the team at BHI Digital Print Services are set to present their findings to senior management early in 2009 to explore how the savings can be applied organisation-wide.

Separately, another Konica Minolta client, Macquarie Lighthouse Press, the printing arm of Macquarie University, won a NIPPA Bronze Award for Digital using the Konica Minolta bizhub PRO C6500. The University's John Cason picked up this award, which recognises excellence in both digital and offset printing.

David Procter, national manager, Konica Minolta Business Solutions Australia Production Printing Group, commented: "We are thrilled that two of our long-standing partners have been recognised by NIPPA in this way. We feel it is testament to the value of our relationships that we can work together to think differently and continue to set new standards in print production."
